Fantasy Midgets

Angell Park Speedway has added a twist to the Fantasy Midget season for 2008. We have assembled some of the finest minds in midget racing and it’s your challenge to beat them. We will keep weekly stats as always and year-long point totals, so you can continue to play against your friends. But to eligible for prizes, you’ll have to beat our experts.

We are dedicating the 2008 season to Marty Boyer. Any true midget fan knows the name. Often identified as "The Mayor of Belleville, Kansas," Marty is also a moving force behind the popular midgetmadness website. Early on, Marty was asked to participate and he readily agreed. Unfortunately, over the winter Marty suffered a stroke and will be unable to participate for some time. In dedicating this contest to him, we hope you will all keep Marty’s physical and financial situation in your minds. We are holding a spot for him on the team and we hope to have him on board as soon as he’s ready to start stroking the keys. Please visit here to see how you can help Marty.

Justin Zoch, the editor of "FlatOut Magazine," will be one of our teammates. As a fantasy baseball player, with an acute knowledge of open wheel racing, we felt Justin was an obvious choice. Living in the Twin Cities and announcing at Knoxville Raceway keeps him from getting to Angell Park as often as he’d like. But, just when you think he’s not paying attention, he’ll ask something like, "Hey, how’s Mike Hess doing? Are Waelti and DeSelle still running up front?" While steering the ship that is FlatOut, Zoch seems to find Angell Park’s racers worthy of ink in nearly every issue. We are looking for big things from him during the Fantasy Midget season.

Batman has Robin, David Letterman has writers, Angell Park track announcer Dave Shannon has Tom Lindner and now so do we. Do you think Dave comes up with all of those facts and figures on his own during the races? Both he and Victory Lane interviewer, Dennis Thompson, rely on Lindner for much of their content. Lindner can be seen in the pits prior to the races, spiral notebook in hand, talking with drivers and obtaining interesting tidbits for Dave and Dennis to share with the crowd. Tom’s a fan who often travels beyond the walls of the speedway to view open wheel racing throughout the country and we feel he is going to be tough to beat.

As the president of the Badger Midget Auto Racing Fan Club, Amy Schulz brings an acute knowledge of the cars and stars participating at Angell Park this year. We expect her to use all her resources to keep up on who might be out for the night, which car is sick and who’s got something new on their car that could rocket them to the front.

Angell Park VP Ron Imberg, aka Race Track Ronnie, is the one who directs those attending to the track during the week and on race day. Whether it’s a night where the cushion is king or the huggy pole is the place to be, Imberg and the track elves he directs, have a role in it. We will do our best to see he does not stack the deck in favor of his chosen drivers, but we make no promises.

Last, but not least. Our cleanup hitter, our ace in the hole, our Brett Favre, is Bryan Gapinski. He’s done it all in midget racing. Owner, sponsor, promoter, crewman, announcer and more. Gapinski brings years of midget knowledge to the team. 2008 marks his 20th year as the Badger Midget Auto Racing Association media rep and he is the founder and director of the National Midget Driver of the Year award.

When some fan sneaks through our line, beats the other four in the final turn, it is Gapinski we expect to stop all comers.

Our experts will play by the same rules as the fans, with one exception. If they don’t get their picks in on time we will allow them to carry over the previous week’s picks. We hope you will have fun playing Fantasy Midgets. Please tell a friend. It’s fun and it’s free.
