Brad Sweet Wins Night Two of the USAC Double Header

Brad Kuhn and Brad Sweet each took a feature win as midget racing returned to Angell Park Speedway over the July 4th weekend. Observers were anxious to see what kind of car count C.W. Promotions could coax for its first promoting effort and the results were very encouraging.

With the Badger midgets racing at Beaver Dam, the United States Auto Club (USAC) still drew 20 cars on Saturday at Angell Park, with the support of every (now defunct) Angell Park Speedway Auto Racing Association (APSARA) regular. On the second night, all but one car from the first night returned, plus three Badger regulars competed. The number from Badger might have been double too, had motor problems and crashes not injured several of their cars at their Friday and Saturday shows.

At the driver’s meeting on Saturday, Chris Wilke, president of C.W. Promotions, spoke to the racers as a group, for the first time. One might have expected an impassioned, rousing, address from Wilke, but instead, his message was short, to the point, yet spoke volumes. After introducing himself to the assembled, on the odd chance they did not know who he was, he simply encouraged his drivers to, "Do something for the fans." After offering a couple of examples and focusing on the people in the stands, his speech lasted all of about two minutes. With that, USAC and APS personnel took over the meeting while Wilke stepped back to listen. As for the racing, Saturday saw Indiana’s Brad Kuhn lead every lap as he jumped to the point from the pole position. The track was a bit dry, and had only one good groove. But there was still plenty of room for slide jobs and good battles occurred behind Kuhn. Among them, Dave Darland, Brad Sweet and Jerry Coons Jr. each took turns at the runner up spot. It was interesting at the end as the yellow flag came out with two laps to go, bunching the field. The restart didn’t phase Kuhn as he continued to lead, but it allowed Sweet one more shot at the second place car of Darland. Sweet took advantage and slid under Darland in the second turn and sailed to the runner up spot.

After the win, Kuhn for the benefit of the fans, tried to perform a donut, only to stall in the first turn after turning only 180 degrees. In his interview he acknowledged the poor (albeit nearly impossible) effort at the 360 and thanked the fans for coming.

For the Sunday show, Ron Imberg and crew had the track in top shape. At least two lines were available and some tried a third. In the feature, Davey Ray took to the lead from the pole. A yellow after the first circuit and a red for an eleven car pile-up stalled his momentum. On the restart Darland tried Ray underneath in turn two, but Ray fought him off. Darland did it again on the next lap and made it stick as they crossed the line to complete the third lap.

Coons then took Darland on lap five. A few laps later, the Coons car started to sound sour, but he seemed to be maintaining his speed and pulled away by about eight lengths, followed by Darland, Ray and Sweet.

At about the mid-point, Ray led Darland and Sweet for the second spot and lap 18 had the battle even with Ray running low and Darland high. Right behind them was a carbon copy with Tracy Hines below and Sweet on the upper groove. It was classic Angell Park racing.

With about five laps to go, Coons, Ray and Hines made it three-wide as the maneuvered around lapped traffic in the second turn. In that lap any of the three had the lead, even if only for a second. On the next circuit, Ray’s car stalled out, bring on another caution. Another yellow came out with two to go and Coons still in the lead, his car sputtering no longer. Darland, Sweet and Hines gave chase as they pushed to the checkers. Darland tried Coons low, to no avail, then on the white flag lap, Sweet dove low in turn two and passed both of them. It was a drag race down the backstretch. Sweet surged ahead and held off Coons at the line, followed by Darland and Hines.

On the victor’s stand, Sweet said he told his Kasey Kahne Racing crew to "Never give up," and they didn’t.

Currently the next Angell Park Speedway race is scheduled for August 28 and 29 when USAC will be back in action. Other racing dates are being considered by C.W. Promotions and fans are encouraged to check www.angellpark.com for the latest news.

C.W. PROMOTIONS ASSUMES LEADERSHIP ROLE AT ANGELL PARK

Officials of Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisc. and principals of C.W. Promotions of Milwaukee, Wisc. have announced a multiple-year agreement which will facilitate the continuance of Midget racing at the popular oval, one of America’s oldest continually operating racing facilities. Midget racing debuted at the track in 1946.

The agreement includes five USAC Mopar National Midget races, starting with a July 3 and 4 “doubleheader” and continuing with similar August 28-29 races and the prestigious September 4 "Fireman’s Nationals."

Chris Wilke, president of C.W. Promotions, stated: “We are honored to continue the rich tradition of Midget racing at Angell Park. Personally I am very excited for the opportunity to expand and grow racing in the central Wisconsin area.”

In addition to the announced race dates for 2010, the new promotional team will be seeking additional opportunities in the coming weeks for the facility which also houses the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame. The Wilke name has been synonymous with the sport of auto racing in Wisconsin for many years and the Wilke-Pak Racing Team has forged an all-time record-tying 133 USAC National race victories.

Firm dates for USAC Mopar National Midget races at Angell Park Speedway are as follows:

July 3, July 4, August 28, August 29 and September 4.

NEW DIRECTION FOR RACE MANAGEMENT OF ANGELL PARK SPEEDWAY

The Board of Angell Park Speedway announced today they have entered into discussions with a group of private investors to assume management of all racing operations at the famed facility. The negotiations are targeted for race activities only, and do not impact other events including Mounds Pet Food Warehouse Dog Fest 2010, Sweet Corn Festival, car shows, or weddings.

During this time, scheduled weekly Sunday night racing sanctioned by Angell Park will be suspended until further notice.  This decision does not impact previously scheduled special events, such as the USAC National Midget Series when the tour visits Angell Park.

The next scheduled racing event will be the USAC National Midget Series as they make their 2010 debut at Angell Park on July 3rd and 4th for a 2-day holiday weekend event. The August 28th and 29th USAC National Midget Race and the September 4th Fireman’s Nationals remain on the Angell Park Calendar for 2010.

“It is the desire of Angell Park to continue our rich tradition of Sunday night Midget racing” stated Les McBurney, General Manager of Angell Park Speedway. “We are excited about the possibility of securing a new partnership which can continue to bring great racing events to Angell Park.”

Angell Park Speedway is owned by the Sun Prairie Volunteer Fire Department and has hosted midget racing since 1946, and remains one of the country’s oldest continuing operating race facilities.

The Board of Angell Park Speedway would like to thank all of the loyal fans, car drivers, car owners, and sponsors that have supported Midget car racing.  Questions about any Angell Park events can be directed to Les McBurney, General Manager, at 608-837-5252 ext. 22 or via e-mail Angellpark@spwl.net
